Selecting Items Tutorial

1. Open up your image. I chose this one:

2. Now use the zoom tool, to zoom in 200%.

3. Next, go to the toolbar, and select the 'Polygonal Lasso Tool.' It looks like this:

If it's not there, right click the other lasso tool and then select it!

4. Use this tool to outline anything. I'm outlining myself. All you have to do is click your mouse for a starting point... drag it to outline, and to make an anchor point, just click again. You'll get the hang out of it if you just try it out yourself once or twice!

5. Now your item is outlined! Once you're done and zoomed back out, it should look like this:

6. You're all done! ...well, unless, the background is still visible somewhere else. Here's what I mean... in this case, if you look on the right side of me, there's an area where you can see the beach inbetween my arm and body. To get rid of this... continue to the next step. :D

7. Zoom back in to 200%, and click on the lasso tool again.

8. Now towards to the top of the screen, you'll see four types of selection tools. Click the 3rd from the left (subtract from selection), it looks like below:

9. Outline the background in that area I mentioned eariler. :) It should look like below when done:

10. Zoom out. You're done! :D

11. If you press control J, you'll make this selection turn into a new layer... and then using the layers palette, click on the background layer... you can change the beach to a different background! Go to my other tutorials to learn this in a clearer manner. :)
